So, I've got to replace the panda corydoras in my 46 gallon tank as they're too small and keep getting nipped at and beaten up by my serpae tetras. I love the look of Zebra Striata loaches and have decided that they're going to be my bottom dweller.

The tank is a 46 gallon bow front, 36" long, 16.25" wide, 20" high.

How many should I get for the tank?. I know that loaches are a schooling fish. I was thinking six to eight but I figured I'd consult the "experts" on how many I should add and get some opinions.

Thanks! :)

I have 4 Zebra Loaches. Three is the minimum you should have!

I would go for Pakistani/YoYo Loach instead. Zebra loach have almost identical behavior to cories in my experience and its likely they will get picked. YoYo Loach are semi aggressive like the tetra so thats a better choice

I'll have to see if the LFS can order me in the yoyo loach (and what the price difference is).

How many is the biggest number I could put into the tank (without crowding the bottom too much?), as I'm sure like all schooling species, the bigger the group, the happier the fish! :)

To be honnest I think they will be cheaper, in my LFS the Zebra Loach are £2.95 and the YoYo Loach are £2.50 :hyper:

Ive had a Yoyo loach for 6 years , at the moment he is just over 3.5 inches (iPhone screen size). In exceptionally rare cases they will reach over 7 inched but normally, they are maximum 5 inches. They will be fine in a 46 gallon aquarium and will not be picked on. Also the other day (2yearsago!) I got 4 Yoyo and 4 Zebra and the yoyo are currently fine bnut the zebra died within a week of purchase. Just warning ya! :hyper:

How many yoyo loaches should I get? Four? Six? Eight?

Yes, YoYo Loaches are a full $2.00 cheaper than Zebra Loaches in my LFS.

Thats a shame if you still decide them get them I would suggest getting 6 or even better 10.

Would there be enough -space- for 10 in the bottom of my tank?
The footprint of the tank is 16.25" x 36"...

My concern is that thee wouldn't be enough space. I can stock a small tank with bottom dwellers no problem; but give me a big tank with bigger fish, and I'm totally lost. I'd like to keep them for the entire span of their lives, not have to rehome some at a later date.

The local pet store wants $10.00 a piece for both the Zebra and Yoyo loaches. I know for a fact that if I call around, someone will have them cheaper than that.... The local store is always MASSIVELY expensive when it comes to any fish.

EDIT:
Called another store; a good $2.00 cheaper than the local store.... looks like I'm going to have to travel for these fish.

For your tank size, ideally you'd want to have around 6 YoYo Loaches. That way you'd have lots of left over room and they will be in a fairly large group  . AND dont forget to ask for DISCOUNTS!!!

EDIT:
Also if you trade in your Panda Cories, they might give you some sort of discount or they might swap some yoyos for them, its worth a try.

The pandas are in too rough of shape to trade in. Their fins are all nipped and they're a little on the skinny side due to some nippy bully serpae tetras. They're currently recovering in my 10 gallon tank with the otocinclus, a trio of peppered corys and a TON of guppies.

I'm definitely going to smile, batt my eyelashes, flirt a little, etc. and somehow convince the employee at the LFS that I deserve a discount for multiple fishes. :p

The panda corys, once they regrow their fins, are going to be the bottom dweller in a female betta sorority tank.
