hey there,

i am pretty new to this game and im trying to pick up as much info as pos,

to cut a long story short, due to ill health my mother had to close her pet shop and hey presto, i got a tank and some fish,

the tank is aprox 95 litres, my question is wether it is overstocked or not,

ive checked all stats of water and all looks fine, all the fish seem to be getting on and going about their business without any fighting etc.....

i have in the tank......

1 sword tail,

5 small mollies,

2 small clown loach,

1 ruby shark,

1 neon tetra,

2 black skirted tetra,

4 colombian tetra,

1 glowlight tetra,

1 shrimp,

and 1 small eel, dont know its name,

like i say, all seems fine, picked a few tips up on here, do water changes on a sunday as well as hoovering etc......

your imput would be apreciated as to if its overstocked or understocked,

thanks
lee

OK here is what I would do:

Lose the Clown loach, (they get 12+inches)
Boost up your neon tetra, black skirt tetras and glowlight tetras.(all appreciate groups)
Get a couple more Shrimp.
Do you have a pic of the eel? Could you describe it? (same 4 the ruby shark)

Did you cycle the tank before adding fish?

Hi i'm not sure where your from as you havn't filled out your profile 75 litres = 21 uk gal or 25 us gal. If you go by the general rule of 1" to a gallon I'd say your over stocked...this is very rough
1 sword tail = 1.5"
5 mollies = 8"
2 clown loach = over 20"
1 ruby shark = 5"
8 various tetras = 8"
The eel i have no idea??? So very approx a potential of over 40" of fish, in a 20 to 25 gal tank.

Your neon tetra needs friends..at least 6.

Add another sordtail so he has friends and add some more glowlight tetras for friends as well.

Neons need to feel comfortable, and to do this they have to be in groups. Most of us on here have 10+ neons.

hi james,

the tank was cycled without fish for about 2 months, the fish were gradualy put in over a couple of months also and not at once,
the eel is black and orange stripes,
hopefully in june i will be upgrading to a much bigger tank, poss 6ft if the mrs allows lol,
do you think i could keep the clown loaches till then as they are only bout inch an a half long???
thanks for your advice mate and to the others that have replied,
:good: :good:

Hi, i would have thought so and a 6' will be plenty big enougth

so in veiw of what fish i have in the tank now at the mo, should i ad to make bigger groups for the tetras, the tank is about 95 litres,
or should i wait till i have a bigger tank????

thanks again

Tricky question, i think some one else with more experienced needs to answer that one

True is really tricky. Is there no other place you could put some of the fish just untill you get your new tank? Myabe a real small one for a shoal of tetra's or two? If not you cant add any more fish to that ank, to make upto the recomended groups of tetras yor looking atadding what another 16" of fish to an already fully stocked tank, even over stocked if anyofthem have grown yet(clowns) you need to move some of them, or maybe give a couple of the tetras away they dont cost much. For every tetra you remvoe add one of your favorite shoal and have a 8 strong shoal. Add beg steal or borrow to get your new set-up asap!
Could mean dong the washing cooking and cleaning for a few weeks but it will be worth it.

Does your eel look like this?

If so, it's not an eel, it's called a kuhli loach. Many people think they're eels because of the way they move.

Lol

You can keep the clown loaches for a while, id say until there about 1.5-2.0 inches.
BTW You can get a couple more tetras to boost up your shoals.

no worries

still not sure if i should put more fish in my tank though, i may go for the idea of swapping my single fish for types that i already have in to get the grouping,
