Hey,

I've been experimenting recently with what sort of fruit and veg my fish will eat. i usually also buy frozen bloodworms in, as a treat every now and then. But their main staple diet is flake food, and I've read recently that cheap flake foods just don't cut it compared to terafin etc.

but i can't really afford £5 for a small tub of flakes, when supermarkets do their own for half the price.
I'm just wondering really what sort of staple diets do you use for your fish, and in quantities too. I always think I'm overfeeding the fish.. but they always look hungry!!

Also... Whats the best part of a lettuce leaf to use?

Cheers.

i have 2 bristlenose catfish, 2 golden honey dwarf gourami and a male betta all in one tank, they get blood worms, every second day or so, and i have some left over crushed up chichild pellets that were given to me at a local aquarium as a sample, i also feed them a pea, skinned about once a week, the bristle nose go crazy for it! and the gourami are always nibbleign at my plants, a friend of mine has had good results with bettas feedign them 'colour inhansing' foods but as long as your fish look happy and healthy with what your giving them why change it? i only feed them peas because they seem to enjoy them more than algae pellets :) good luck

hi
our fish love romaine (or kos) lettuce. i usually put a whole leaf in stalk & all after putting it in a bowl, pouring boiling water over it & leaving it for about 1/2 an hour.( to 'blanche' or soften it) i cool it in cold water & fix it to a suction clip on the tank wall.
you'll need to take out the remnants after a day or 2 or it starts to rot. i also feed peas, cucumber, zucchini (courgette) by softening them as well. have you had a look at online fish shops? they often have good deals on fish food & it does tend to be cheaper when you buy the bigger tubs even though its a bigger outlay initially it works out a lot cheaper in the long run. our fish also get tubifex cubes,( also available in a big tub by king brit ish)algae & catfish wafers & once again i buy them in the bigger tubs/packets as its more economical. its not just catfish that love the tablets all our fish go mad for them so worth a go.
i like ( or should i say our fish like) king british, aquarian & sera flake food & i take turns in what i buy for a bit of variety. their fav tablets are hikari sinking catfish & algae tabs & also king british tablet treats go down a storm too.
online stores do charge a couple of quid for delivery but if you try & get everything you need in one order ( including meds etc) it is cheaper than buying a small tub in a lfs.
ours also get at least once a week defrosted frozen beasties such as bloodworm, black mosquito larvae & brine shrimp
good luck.

All my fish absolutely love Omega One sinking shrimp pellets (especially the Corys and Cherry Barbs). i feed the top dwellers Omega One Tropical Flakes but they don't like it that much, they do like Aquarian Floating Pellets though.

Daily here is how it goes for my fish.

Breakfeast: Flake Food

Lunch: Brine Shrimp

Dinner: Flake Food

if it's principaly a cost issue, then how about making up your own frozen food to feed say 3 or 4 times per week?
A small cheap fish, or a very few prawns, or a very few cockles/mussles or whatever, from the supermarket, something veggie (leftover cooked carrots or cucumber or anything really) maybe some garlic (apparantly this goes down well with fish) put into blender until it's fairly well broken up, put in ice cube tray and stick it in the freezer. Defrost one cube at a time to feed the fish.
What you save on feeding frozen bloodworm you can spend on getting a better quality flake food.
