lately i've seen one or two folk on tv (e.g. essex jungle) say when talking about keeping fish things along the lines of 'what's the point, okay they're maybe nice to look at but it's not as if you can handle / cuddle them or anything!' so, what is your main reason for keeping fish and does the aforementioned type of statement annoy you and if yes why?

secondly, do any of you keep fish that you might see once in a blue moon (e.g. something that spends 98% of its time under a rock or in a cave) and if yes what type of fish and why?

Yeah, i have a striped and a spotted raphael (talking catfish) that i never see. I have to take everything out of the aquarium to see them. lol.

The two main attractions to fish keeping for me is:

1. The massive range of beautiful shapes and colours available.
2. They are far less time consuming than a small furry animal.

Yes I have a clown pleco in my 90L and a Mystus mysticetus in my 180L that I have to go actively looking for.

My Bristle noses spend 90% of my fish viewing time hidden away as do the Khuli loaches, it makes it all the more special when you do get to see them. I think the major attractions with keeping fish aside from their colours and characters is that many a person can not have a cat, dog or bird in rental premisis but they can usually get away with having a tank. Lets face it a tank with all its inhabitants (apart from the odd accidental fish water spill or worse broken tank) aren't going to pee and poop all over the place like a new puppy and sometimes a new kitten. The fish wont wake the neighbors at the crack of dawn as say almost any of the parrot species larger than a budgie (but trust me a heap of budgies can be really noise too). And you don't have to take fish for walks so for an unabled bodied person a fish tank gives them something to look at apart from a tv (and many oldies wont touch a computer), as well as keep them interested and active to the best of their abilities. Plus scientists have proven that stroking a cat or dog, watching birds even in an aviary and watching fish in a tank or pond all reduces stress and heart rate. That's just two of the reasons many old peoples home/ retirement villages are setting up tanks in thier premisis, installing birds and one place I know of has even invested in a rag doll kitten and some sort of poodle cross dog. All for the benefit of their residents (and the visitors get a kick out of all the animals as well).

Wow, I hope I end up in THAT retirement home!

Golden nugget pleco i used to own wouldn't come out at all, i'd only see it on a friday at bout 3am when i come in drunk!
but even though i hardly seen it, i loved it...

Fair enough you cant cuddle your fish ect but i find them alot more entertaining to watch then my dog

Used to be because fish are just great and fun to have. Recently for me it's to breed. Anytime I get a new fish, I must breed it, so I can give back to the fish community and breeding is also just plain fun.
