Yet another changing filter question....

I'm replacing the whisper filters in my 2.5 gallon minibows with azoo palrm filters. Normally you just have both filters running together for a few weeks and then make the switch, but there's not enough room on the back of the tank to have both filters running together. So to get a bacteria colony established I can put the filter sponges in the tanks for a few weeks then make the switch right?

yes but you need to add some flow to them so wrap them around an airline and pump air through them.
