Well yesterday I noticed rusty leaning against the filter in the morning. I did a water change in the hope to perk him up. It didn't and seemed to make him worse. He was sitting on the gravel for most of the day. In a panic I did another water change, offered him brine shrimp-nothing. I woke up a few times last night to check on him and he passed away during the night. My little one was so upset as was I.

I had a blue eyed platy die yesterday too. It wasn't a good day for me. Absolutely gutted, will never find another as gorgeous as him.

so sorry to hear that, its never nice loosing fish you've cared for for so long, I know Rusty is not replaceable but I'm sure you find another fish with as much character, I hope you do

I'm not getting another. Seeing my little girl so upset was awful. We did however find a mystery fry in the other tank so have put it in the 30L that rusty was in. I was just going to empty the tank and get rid of it. I redone it all for him. I only had him a few weeks :(

Sorry to hear the bad news.

Sorry to hear about rusty. :rip:

Hopefully your daughter will get as hooked on fush as you are!

Aw Ny82 I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Rusty, may he

Have comfort knowing you did the best you could for him and that he would have enjoyed his time with you and your daughter.

Thanks everyone

My daughter needs to understand that this is the process of life she will be 4 years old in a few weeks, she understands now, so we buried him in the garden.
She already wanted another but I wont let her. We did however pick a tiny cobra endler cross. He is in the 30L by himself with the mystery fry. He's tiny so won't be a threat to the fry. She loves him already and helped do a water change and feed him. I told her that when he's older he will go into the guppy tank with the others.
I am so proud of her

There are some times that things like this happen and there is nothing that we can do to "fix" it no matter how hard we try.

Aww sorry to hear about your fish he was beautiful, it's great your little girl is learning fish keeping with you at such an early age, I am having a little girl in September and I am hoping when she is old enough I can get her into fish keeping too

This is true. I can speculate however much I like and think, what if this and what if that. My water stats have been stable for the last 18 months, but maybe changing the whole substrate caused a nitrite spike? I kept testing it and it was 0 as I was doing daily water changes. Were daily water changes too much and I stressed him out too much?

Aww congratulations! If you are into it-she will naturally be interested. My daughter is learning so fast. She says to the workers at the LFS "I can't keep a goldfish as they need to live in ponds" she's very confident lol. When I was young I do admit, I did say fish aren't a real pet because you can't pet them etc but I think you appreciate them more when you learn about them and they don't drop dead every week. Well not for most people :(

Never a good day when something like this happens. I feel for you and your daughter.
Its nice that your daughter takes an interest in your fish, keeping them and taking care of them has so much to teach us about humanity. My daughter isnt interested in fish, just ponies. The boys love them and coped with our recent loss very well.
The circle of life rolls on and like a pheonix new life arrives from the ashes of death. Good luck with your new fry!

Thankyou. There's no point in sugar coating anything. If they learn about death young, they know it's a natural part of life.
That's good your boys took it well, it's so much easier to deal with.
Mines is right into my little pony, but she loves watching the fish. I had to hide the food because first thing she does in the morning is run into the living room and dump food into all the tanks. She gets so excited when there's fry.
We have named him phoenix. His dad died yesterday too, but mums fine so I am hoping this fry takes on their characteristics-pure white with blue eyes.
It brings us hope, because that's all we have :)

Not just hope, dreams too!
Yay for Phoenix, stay strong little one. And stay + Ny82
