My dwarf gourami for the past 2 days has been in the same spot, just stairing at the heater near the top of the water hovering. And every so often it will nip up and breath water then go back to the same spot and not moove. Hes not ate today as I dropped in a food tablet at the other side of the tank and he didnt go to it. He does look like his belly has swollen at the sides abit but not much, or maybe its my eyes playing tricks on me. His breathing is the same as normal, fins slowley mooving to keep him stable, water stats are all fine, all at 0ppm apart from ph = 7 and nitrate = 10ppm. And the temp is 26 degrees.

UPDATE:

Today he is even more swollen and has red blood spot on his anal fin, He is still in the same spot and not eating, I dont want him to infect my other fish and I dont have a hospital tank, Is there a quick way to put the fish out of his misery?

Hi - before you go down the route of euthanising the fish, let's see if anything can be done to make him better.

You mention that his body is a bit bloated - can you see any scales sticking out? (try viewing from above). This is a usual sign of Dropsy, which is very difficult to treat once its reached the stage of scales sticking out.

It could also be a bacterial infection. Is there any clamping of fins? What are his pectoral fins doing (those long flowing, cotton-like fins at the front). Are they both intact? Clamped? Any fin rot? The bloodstained anal fin could be a sign of this. You can treat with an anti-bacterial, like Myxazin, which is good for things like this if caught early enough.

swollen belly, bleeding from just above the anal fin, blood spot on side one side of his body, fins all ok and flapping, breathing is fast like panting.

Your description seems to fit this description well... taken this from the Waterlife website:

"SYMPTOMS
2. Body-rot, fin-rot, tail-rot, patches of angry red tissue on body, haemorrhagic discolouration of vent (anal) area of abdomen; any or all of the above symptoms if not promptly treated may quickly deteriorate into the following terminal symptoms:- bloated appearance of abdomen (but scales Not standing off body), Exophthalmia ("Popeye"), abnormally high respiratory rate (i.e. faster than 90 gill beats/min.).

DISEASE
BACTERIAL - caused by several species of rod-shaped, motile, (="mobile"), Gram-negative bacteria. Most species belong to the Aeromonas genus. Disease can be caused by overfeeding, poor hygiene / filtration, ammonia / nitrite toxicity."

Treatment is with MYXAZIN but you will need to act fast as once they reach the bloated stage it can be difficult to remedy.

Increase the aeration if you do treat with meds.

Regards - Athena

I dont understand why its ill thoe because I have not been overfeeding, the tank is allways clean(1 week water change 25%), There is allways 0 amounts of ammonia and nitrite.

Is it just because the dwarf gouramis are prone to disease anyway. Will it infect my other fish in the tank?? I will have to go to the fish store tomorow and find this MYXAZIN. thanks

Yes, dwarf gouramis can be prone to this sort of thing. They suffer usually with ulcers, too.

Has he had any reason to be stressed out recently? Any bullying in the tank? New tankmates? Any dead tankmates recently? What do you feed him on?

Sorry, I should have asked if you were in the UK. If not you may not be able to get Myxazin - but just ask for a good anti-bacterial medicine. Let's hope it's not too late for the little guy!

Let us know what happens - Athena

yea I live in the uk, no reasons why he should be stressed out, the only new fish I have added was some cory julli, and they stay at the bottom, he has allways acted strange since the day i got him, swimming with his nose pressed against the glass allday and flashing. I feed my fish a once a day, sometimes, Flakes, Tablet flakes, Tubifex, Dried bloodworm.

UPDATE: Found him floating at the top today dead :(. Got some of that MYAXIN for the tank, should i put some in to make sure my other fish are ok, or will it kill my beneficial bacteria?
