I have a small 4 gallon tank that I have upgraded for a 28gallon tank. I have transfered alot (heater, plants, some gravel, driftwood, water) from the old tank and also the new tank is second hand so I have just rinsed the filter and gravel ( I know it was disease free). My problem is that in both my new and old tank the water has an orangey tint. I test weekly and they both have good readings. I am in a hardwater area and only have the lights on for about 8 hours. I only have 2 long finned zebra danios and 1 borneo suckerfish( will be getting more fish soon) so not overstocked. I also do weekly water changes. Any advice? sorry I ramble but trying to give as much info as possible. This is my first time so sorry if I have missed anything out.

Most likely the color comes from the driftwood. It's nothing to worry about unless the color bothers you, in which case your only options are to remove the wood or put some carbon in your filter (or just hang a bag of activated carbon inside the tank; it'll do the same thing but slower). The color comes from tannins that leach from the wood; they are supposedly good for the fish.

The wood will eventually stop leaching these chemicals. This can take anywhere from months to years, though.

Quite new to the whole fish thing, I have got a carbon sponge thing in my filter, is that what you mean or is it something else. Carbon in filter is quite old though so could replace. Thank you for your quick reply.

The carbon filter will only last for 4 or 5 days you could replace it until the colour is gone. Don´t leave it there permanently.
