that is exactly what it looks like

Almost without a doubt the tannins from the wood, they are actually quite beneficial and can give the tank a more natural look.

yeah i kind of like it, but my mother and girlfriend are having a conniption about it being 'dirty'

I have several tanks where the water takes on a tan or yellow color from the wood decoration. Since the same thing happens in a lake or pond, I don't worry much about it and my fish don't either.
