Yellow Lab

Hi

i was round at brothers house last night and he has 2 yellow labs in with someother cichlids, not too sure what they are butn i hav a feeling that one is a small frontosa but don't quote me on that.

Anyways when i was there one of the yellow lab changed colour to a mottled black colour and i was just curious what it was ...territorial maybe??

FYI The black on a yellow lab indicates that it is male.

If the black is on more than just the fins, then it could mean a number of things....more-so that it is either ammonia burn...(probably not) or that the yellow is from a long line of breeding and from bad lines. I have learned a lot about how these fish are purchased, (sought after) and recently have become wild caught again....going for HUGE prices....(the yellow almost being unbearable to look at, so bright) however, I have seen yellows that are almost all black, showing almost no more aggression than any of the other fish, so I don't think it has much to do with dominance. Although they will be just as happy as a "non" black yellow. Just looks kinda shabby. As always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...It's just kind of difficult to see what you mean w/o a pic, but I think I have an idea of what you are talking about. There is probably nothing wrong with this fish.

Thee reason for the black depends on where it is. Black on fins is normal for both sexes. Males will often get black beards, or some black around the face in general, even in wild caught specimens. Black barring on the fish has also been seen on wld fish, though it's nice to get solid yellow ones.

A couple of my yellow labs can do this - one minute they are bright yellow, the next they are mottled / black stripes. Seems to be either in reaction to something another fish has just done or may be just mood swings! Next minute, bright yellow again - quite strange to see sometimes!
