I am thinking of getting some yellow labs for a 29 g tank. How many would be suitable? I have guppies in this tank. Will they eat the guppies? Any other suggestions (African Chiclids) for this tank? Thanks; Don T.

you cant put them in with the guppys. they will tear them to shreds, and requirements for guppys and labs are totally different. despite them being more docile cichlids they will eat them. for a 29 gallon, if you took the guppys out you may be able to put max - 6 or 7 in there. but thats with ample conditions, (i.e, lots of caves, good/right water conditions, rockwork, etc)
cant think of any african cichlids you could put in there.
hope this helps.

Besides perhaps kribs, I have no knowledge of any African cichlid that would be compatible with guppies, and even the kribs are a maybe. If you want to keep the guppies I would suggest you set your sights on something different than African cichlids (or cichlids in general) and maybe concentrate on other livebearer tank mates or other compatible community tank fish like tetras or small gouramis.
If you were to replace the guppies however, there are many species of African cichlids which can work in a tank of 29 gallons. You can do some investigation on shell dwelling cichlids ("shellies") on any search engine (or this forum ;)), as well as do some general reading on cichlids. Whatever you choose, just be sure to thoroughly research a fish before buying it, and when in doubt, ask a question on this forum like you're doing now :).

I,m not woried abought the guppies. In fact I would prefer something that would eat them. Don T.

Even if they ate the guppies, Yellow labs get too big for a 29g IMO. A group of 5 inch, sometimes aggressive fish need atleast a 40g IMO.

The suggestion of shell dwellers is a good one for a 29g. I have never kept them (but wanted to) and have heard they have alot of personality.
