I have a yellow lab; female I think, that spends all day hiding under rocks....I have 12 africans in a 55 us gallon tank, with plenty of places to hide...None of the other fish hide, including smaller Kenyi and Jewels....It has only been in about a week know, I have heard the yellows are less aggresive than some of the others....Should I remove him/her or wait it out, I have checked it for fight damage and I see no marks on it....

bear in mind that jewels are not african cichlids and can bully, yes they not as aggresive as others but maybe adding a male into the tank may help her out into the open. give that a try :good:

How many yellow labs are in the tank? You want like 6 because they like to be in a group. :good:

He or she is the only yellow, I have found out I need a few more...Will have to swap some others out I think....OK I am confused about the Jewel cichlid origins....I have read on several sites that they are riverine(sp) from africa....They don't need the high PH, so they can be kept with american and or african, or atleast that is what I was led to believe....One other note I did say the yellow was hiding, I might have mistated that I believe it is the only african that has set up territory so far....She doesn't appear to be afraid of anything in the tank

The jewel cichlid is african but its from the west so not one of the rift valley cichlids (malawi, tanginika, victoria).

It sounds as if your labs not very happy it should be all over the tank the things never stay still in my tank it could just be lonley, or settling in to its new environment sometimes it can take a month for a fish to settle or up to a year to show its true nature which is why a lot of incorrectly stocked tanks work for a while.
