Hey,

Me again lol. Basically I have a 12 gallon tanks has about 15 fiish in it at the moment. 6 serpaes, 1 peacock goby, 6 mollies, 2 albino catfish and a black neon. I've wanted some puffer fish and as its a small tank I think yellow dwarf puffers would be best suited. I know they can be fin nippers. I was thinking one or two. You think they'd be ok in the tank I mean its pretty peaceful at the moment but puffers are just so damn interesting. Any thoughts would be great!,

Cheers.

Nope they are very nippy. Dwarf puffers should only be kept in a species tank and even then its only 1-2 fish for ten gallons or something like that.

Also you are WAAAYYYY over stocked for a 12 gal.

I see, Might get worse as they get bigger then. Its been about 4 months and they all seem fine and do a water change once a month about 25%. REally wanted some puffers. Darn.

No, Is that bad. I test it weekly, Nitries 0ppm as well as ammonia nitrates lowish. PH is a bit high i suppose.

yeah, do at least 25% every two weeks.

Also, i'd get rid of the tetras and switch the mollies for guppies. :good:

what catfish do you have?

lowish is 10ppm. Their little Albino catfish. Mollies were given to me. They havent really grown only about an inch..the biggsest two. I thought the tests reflected if you need a water change or not? Thats why i've only been doing it once a month.

10ppm for the nitrate is okay, What about for the Ammonia and nitrites? What Testing kit have you got? Liquid of those bits of paper things??

I read that as "Nitries 0ppm as well as ammonia..."

You should consider upping the water changes though :) If all the fish seem to be fine then you're doing OK. It does also depend on how much filtration you have too but you should not rely on it :)

Why not get a cheap 10gallon tank for a pair of puffers? I'm sure you could source one with a heater and filter for less than £30 :) They do need it fairly well planted, and you need to feed them live snails as part of their diet. All things to take into consideration.

I haven't got room for another tank, thats really why I only got a 12 gallon to start with. I use the Api Freshwater master test kit, all liquid tests. Might up the water changes to every 2 weeks then if you think the water qualities not as great as it could be. Really didn't think i was over stocked with that but i'm pretty new to this hence why im still a newbie lol.

Yes dwarf puffers are out of the question. They arent just fin nippers they are actually agressive and thou they dont grow very big they pack a powerful punch (so ive read) I have also read that the require a spieces only tank and are territorial. Also it is said 1dwarf puffer to 3 gallons of water thou 5 is much better for both the messiness of how they ear and their territorial issues. In getting some soon monthish :) there is actually a pinned thread around here somewhere on them. Good luck

I know someone who's got dwarf puffers in a tank with mollies, gourami's and guppies that are mysteriously getting nipped. Could well be the male gourami's but I've had my suspicions that its the dwarf puffer for awhile, and whilst I can see the temptation (they're gorgeous little fish) I personally intend to steer clear.
