sadly, i don't know the cause so successful treatment seems largely impossible. He hasn't eaten in a long time but up until more recently he never showed any sign of illness except for being uninterested in food. hopefully with clean, lowered, water, some salt, extra stress coat and regulated sunlight, he'll be as comfortable as possible.

:/ poor thing. i'll bet he had whatever it is he has inside him when i got him just brewing away. if nothing else, i wish pet stores would at least TRY to keep their fish healthy while they're in their care. of course this is partially my fault, not catching on sooner. I thought he was moping over a change of residence, and i've been in an out so I only had enough time to do water changes and make sure no one was OBIOUSLY sick. I just figured he'd start eating again when he got hungry. Guess not

I know how you feel. Unfortunately, when they develop dropsy it is normally too late to cure. I just lost the most beautiful yellow butterfly VT that I had even seen. :-( I found him one week at Wal-Mart, but decided not to get him because he had a split tail (almost made him look like a double tail). I also did not have a tank for him. I went back the following week and he was still there...I couldn't resist so I brought him home. At first he was doing great. Then, after a week or two he stopped eating and started showing symptoms of dropsy. I keep thinking that if I had gotten him when I first saw him, I could have saved him. :/

Sorry about your fish. It's weird that your fish is yellow also.

a VT from walmart too, for that matter. But oh well. Some people have had results curing dropsy, but the trouble is that dropsy is a symptom and not the disease. It's probably something bacterial and internal, but it's way too late now, i think all i can do is keep him comfortable. :/ It's sad, worse because i didn't react anywhere near soon enough to do anything. poor guy.

Scales stick out so the fish looks like a pinecone crushing and squishing his/her organs

What salt are you using? Epsom salts are better for dropsy as they help draw away fluids. Sounds like you are doing all you can, I hate dropsy :grr:

Awww so sorry to hear that. :-( I truly hate dropsy. Nasty icky disease that seems uncureable. I've only ever had 4 fish with it at all but even so, just once is too much imo. Can only hope he keeps as comfortable as possible right now. Never a good sign when they stop eating.

i'll maybe pick up some epsom salts. righ tnow he's in regular aquarium salt, but really, i don' think either are gonna help much. poor boy :(
