Although my Girlfriend is insisting on calling him "Betty"

He's currently swimming round a 35l (US 10 Gallon) tank with a small filter seeded with old media from my community tank - quite pleased with this as the current is almost non-existent.

After a quick explore of his new home he's now zooming around, and whilst I wouldn't normally feed a new introduction in my main tank, he looked hungry so I dropped a few bloodworms into his tank - they didn't even make it a quarter of the way down

He's been in there a few hours now, and seems to be loving it - zooming everywhere and flaring at my finger if I put it on the glass. When we leave the room he sinks and sits on the rock, when we come back in he darts around all over the place :D

Apologies for the poor quality - he won't stay still to take a photo...

Wasn't Odysseus a Greek mythological character?

Yeah, he was the king of Ithaka - featured in the Iliad.

Anyhoo...I've got a few 'betta' sorry couldn't resist that piccies...

Is he alone in the tank? It is very nice!! I am sure he really loves it in there. Is he a VT or HM? (the pics were a little bit blurry around the tail) He is a beauty! And I love the tank design!

Aww he's so cute!!
Congrats.
& from what I can see, nice setup!

Thanks guys.

He's in there by himself at the moment (Monkey didn't fancy staying - he just helped put the rest of the plants in...) If he gets any tank mates then I'll see how they react and I can then move them to my main community tank if I need to.

However, to be honest he seems more than happy enough by himself in there so we'll see. I'd thought of some snails, however I don't fancy using them as a snack for him!

I've kept apple (or mystery) snails in the past and never had any problems aside from some flaring (which the snail ignored, lol), and a nip or two at the snail which didn't hurt it. I've also had luck with ghost/glass shrimp, they were ignored, and added interest to the tanks since they are always busy little guys. Beautiful betta by the way.

Thanks.

I've not really done a lot of reading about shrimp - what're they like to care for? How likely are they to be a tasty treat?

Shrimp are really easy to care for, at least glass/ghost shrimp are. They'll eat whatever your betta eats, they'll even steal the food right from him. It really depends on the betta as to whether or not the shimp become a snack, I've had the best luck with buying the largest (older) shrimp and my bettas don't seem to see them as food. I've even had the shrimp breed in the tank and have several generations of shimp with my bettas. The funniest thing to see was one of the bettas start flaring at the shrimp, and the shrimp would completely ignore them. My bettas would proudly "protect" their territory, while the shrimp calmly went about searching for more food.

You'll just want to make sure there are no gaps in your hood the shrimp can fit through, especially if you have any plants or anything near the surface, shrimp are notorious for seeking freedom on the floor. Snails too will occasionally make a bid for freedom. I had one apple snail that made several trips across the carpet, scared the crap out of the cats. I'd wake up to a snail trail across the floor  , and two cats huddled in the corner as far away from the snail as possible. Then again my cats are total wusses. The snail was fine, I'd just pick it up and plop it back in the tank, and it would go back to doing snail things.

Thank you....and haha...I've got laminate in my lounge...who knows where they'd end up!!!

Well, next time I'm over near my LFS I'll have a look to see what's about. I've seen some Shrimp in my local "Pets at Home" but I wouldn't buy from there as the stock is terrible. Last time I was there a Red Tailed shark was doing it's best to eat a Angel Fish that was alive but unable to swim :(

I like the idea of Shrimp so I'll see how it goes :)
