hello all! i just got my first betta today, apparently he is a male crowntail, but i don't really care about that, he is a turqois coloured body with pupleish fins, i don't have any pics as he is still being floated, i bought him a ten gallon tank with a 15 gallon biological filter pump, the tank is ten gallons, i'm still cycleing it so he is in a smaller three gallon tank till friday, what else does the tank need for him to be happy? i'll post pics probably by tonight!

You should get a heater. It would make him a lot happier. Bettas like to be around 78-82 degrees F. Also, try some plants and decorations if you haven't already. Good luck! Hope to see some pictures soon!

thanks for the advice, i don't think that a heater will be absolutely necessary as the water is allready at 76 without one, but i'm up in canada, so come fall i will definately need a heater

oh btw, does it mean anything if sometimes his fins look all realaxed and droopy and other time they will flare up?

Your Betta is doing something we call "flaring." It's a threat display used to ward off other males, and it's quite beautiful. Males put all their fins out and stick out their gill membranes to appear threatening, or sexy to females I suppose.. Mine flares at his own reflection a lot. If your fish is active and healthy, he'll flare at himself quite often.

i got a picture, and yes, the tank has a very strange shape to it

It took me a really long time to come up with a name for mine.. try to pick something that describes both his colors and his personality. I chose Alvin, 'cause he's little, loves attention, and he's bright red (Reminds me of Alvin and the Chipmunks). I almost chose a French name because of how flowing and elegant his fins are (the tips are iridescent), but I liked Alvin better. He just didn't seem like a Jacques or a Jean Luc.

A friend of mine suggested naming a Betta "Alpha," so it would be "Alpha Betta." Any Greek letter would work. Delta Betta, Gamma Betta.. they're all pretty funny.

Hope you can come up with something that suits the fish! Good luck!
