I haqve done it. I have got my boyfriends dad to let me have a fish at his house. I will be moving the tank in on Friday and buying the heater and filter on saturday or thre same day as I tank. Then will be buying a nice CT when tank is mature enough for him... Also I will post pics of tank and fish when ready. I cat believe Im getting my second betta (My first real one) I really cant wait. I just wish the tank would mature after a day lol, but it doesnt so I suppose I will have to wait... Which is the hardest thing for a 15 yr old wanted and knowning im getting a betta some time soon lol...

Maybe you could also post some pics of your bettas and their houses ?

is there mature media in your other tank filter? take no more than 1/3 of it and stuff it in the new filter...will help speed the cycle. a handful of gravel from old tank to new helps too.
they are ridiculously addictive. i spend too much time on aquabid and in pet stores gawking at bettas.
cheers

Im adding some sand from another tank and yes i have 2 fliters maybe 3 that the media can go to the new filter too. Its right me thinking that the media is the rubbish and messy ich from what you clean out from the filter pads right ?

If I do this how long do you reckon I will have to wait ?

Since bettas don't like too much current anyway, why not build a sponge filter? You can run the filter in an existing tank for a week or two to speed cycling very fast! (I think)

the filter Im getting isnt too strong with him, so he should be fine

"media" is the sponges/ceramic/floss that is in the filter. if you have two filters already that you could steal some of the sponge from, that would probably almost instantly cycle the new filter. just make sure that you set it up and get the fish in there right away(or you run the risk of the bacteria dying off-they need the ammonia to survive). or if fishless cycling get some ammonia in the tank before you set up the new filter.
i always use media from existing mature filters to make my sponge filters and they all cycled within a week (one was right away)
any more questions, just ask.
good luck.

i could not change the pad over as it going to be a different filter to the others. Though I suppose I could wash the clean pads in the dirty pads water etc? I need to get the fish in there ASAP before the father changes his mind lol... Though not soon that the fish turns ill. So if i use sand from a mature tank and madia from the filter pads, how soon could i put him in roughly ?

If you use mature filter media, you need to add a fish OR some ammonia right away to keep the bacteria alive. How often can you do water changes?
I've got a betta in a 5.5gall and with a change twice a day, his stats are little more than a trace :)
I also have 1 in a 3.2 gall at work with supposedly cycled media, but his stats were 0.50 nitrite today, so I think the smaller the tank, the harder work it will be to keep levels low. What size is yours?

Im round my boyfriends 5 days aweek so it wouldnt be hard to change water etc.

Could I get away with not having a filter atall but just a heater ? If so how often do I change this water for just one fish ?

Also my tank if 4G (UK)
