Wow my tanks have gone ballistic I thought I’d give mussels a go as a I keep seeing it being fed in the lfs tanks, it has sparked a feeding frenzy I’ve never seen before. I’ve got rummy nose & x-ray tetras coming down to compete with clown loaches, bronze + albino cory's, shrimps & rtbs. In another tank the zebra & shenasis danios are down with my black-line loaches in a blur of action even the khullies are out & waiting for their opportunity to get in on the action. I never seen such a reaction for any other food I’ve fed before. Are mussels actually a good food for fish nutrition wise as I’m thinking I’ll feed it more often

They all love it don't they ? ! All my fish love tucking into some mussel too.

Do all lfs shops tend to sell them ?

If so , i will give it a try :)

they should sell them, but you'd probably get them cheaper at the fish mongers frozen section

Quite expensive at the lfs indeed. Much better and a lot cheaper at the fishmongers or even your local supermarket. Just buy a bag of frozen ones and thaw them before giving.

so just plain musscles?cooked first or not?

i dont trust muscles for me to eat (with them being filter feeders ugg  ) however since i work on a fish bar i will be trying them tonight

I would guess the ones in jars are cooked and in preservatives or some preserving liquid ??
Hence not good for fish and frozen thawed best.

Every now and then i buy a mixed (pre-cooked) seafood bag from my local supermarket, not just for me to eat but for my fish as well. All of my fish thoroughly enjoy mussels as well as prawns and cockles0 my common, para, clown & sailfin plecs and oto's also enjoy cooked squid as well :) .
Raw fish meat also seems to go down a treat a lot of the time, but i have to warn you though- always buy frozen fish meat. I once bought some raw salmon steaks from the refrigerater section in my supermarket, only to get home and find a parasitic worm wriggling out of one of the steaks flesh (i think it was a juevenile tapeworm) . I did an experiment with it and froze it in the freezer which killed it, so i think buying frozen or pre-cooked sea foods is safe for fish consumption  .
Most parasites and deseases are species-specific, but not all are so you should still be on your guard  .

You're kidding right ? you froze a worm that could have made you millions (ok perhaps not quite) if you sued your local supermarket !
