I told them it would help clarify African cichlids if they would say the scientific and common names of fish and they did it! A+ for Highland Tropics in Michigan!

Awesome :good: ! If only the other LFS would follow through. Petsmart here lists scientific names, but gets half of them wrong. :grr: Oh, well, what can you do.

Ya I told my LFS to buy certain types of fish and they did. They label the tank as "Mixed Africans" even after I gave them the specs on the fish :/

Yeah a lot of LFS do mixed mbuna sales and it is a terrible idea because they make it seem like all the fish are okay with one another and when they get mature some aren't... what can you do...

WOW, hey, can you come to my local walmart? I'll have my parents pay for the flight, PLEASE COME AND HELP THEM!

i don't even waste my time trying to tell them all the things they are doing wrong. i don't even buy fish from there anymore because of there service. they put puffers in with other large fish, every fish in that tank has fin problems.

Walmarts around here usually have their tanks empty in a week. im sure atleast half their fish die in their tanks and I hear about fish dieing once in a owners tank after trasport from walmart.

They just shouldn't sell fish.

I think it is very wrong for big department stores to sell fish. They don't have the a good person to work the department. No one is ever there to help you or work with the fish and the tanks ALWAYS look like garbage.

My walmart has its fish in 7 gallon tanks or smaller. In one tank there are 4 pacu and 6 oscars!!!!! They also have over 50 mollies and 25 platies in one tank!!!!! I once asked for there least aggressive cichlid and they said cichlids arent fish they are a type of gum they sell and I almost died from his shear stupidity! Also there is never anyone there to help me and the only reason I go there now is for cheap food and cheap ghost shrimp. They also had 40 white clawed frogs and they were all skinnier than a toothpick!!! I told them and talked to the manager and all they did was put shrimp in there to make the frogs look fatter and they even attmitted that that is the reason they put the shrimp in. Also they said that they do not hold garienties. I think that walmart should either quiet selling fish or get bigger tanks, less fish, someone who knows what they are doing and tries not to con the people into buying sick and poor quality fish.

Yeah it is wrong. Why people don't view fish as living creatures and as disposable pets I will never know. Just because some of them might be cheap there is no reason why they should be treated poorly...

I agree with every word you said. Petsmart treats there crickets better than walmart treats there fish!

Yeah I had a guy tell me the reason they don't take care of their pinkies (baby mice), crickets and feeder fish is because something is going to eat them anyway. I was like well they are still a living creature... give them a nice life while they are here! :-(

Atleast some stores take care of their fish. But petsmart had 2 tanks of angels and one tanks angels all had ich and the other one had red velvet. I told them and they said they know but the said they were going to treat them..... right. I caome back the next day and one tanks labled the white spotted angels and they were selling them for 25 dollars!!!!!! The other tank was labled rare velvet angels 45 dollars!!!!! Can you belive that? They were trying to con buyers into thinking that they werent fish so I told a guy who used to work there and he said that they were doing it so when people realize that they were sick they would go to petsmart to buy the medicine!!!! But finally they got a new batch and returend to there regular prices and acurate names. Also I returned a sick gold dust mollie and they threw it back in with the healthy ones!

Its unfortunately the same case in a lot of shops, I brought some synos that were labeled as nyjasse about 4 months ago then i brought some wild caught ones and got a shock as to what i thought i brought so back went the so called nyjasse and all i got as a reply was " someone else said there not nyjasse,so what are they then " so i told them they were clown synos or ocilfer synos(cant spell it) and there still on sale as nyjasse.

The big chain pets at home are even worse most of the fish in the one by me have fin rot and are even selling puffers as community, i refuse to go there any more.

Yeah at the Petsmart by me they sell green spotted puffers as freshwater community fish  ...

There are only 3 petstores I really buy from: Superpets( home owned), Fish'in times( home owned), Charlies Aquarium( home owned). That tells you somthing, only home owned petstores take good care of there animals and they have reasonable prices and hire people who care. Anytime you guys ever visit peoria, Ill go to Superpets They are nice, good priced, freindly, They listen and take action when needed.
