Supposed to read with out your knowledge Just thought it would be fun to see this poll next to my other. When would you want a fish as a gift? and if you have gotton one as a gift did you like it?

i'd have to vote no (even though i've done that for my dad!) the only people that would have a reason to buy me fish know jack-all about stocking. besides my mother'd deliver every last one with instructions of "oh its easy; just feed it breadcrumbs"

I did once recieve a fish as a gift but it was under complicated circumstances. Basicaly some friend were moving away and the son of this friend liked my tank and realy wanted to buy me a fish. Luckily, his mother told me so beforehand so I explained that it would not be the best idea etc etc. Her son insisted to make it a surprise even though we'd kind of agreed that they should not get me a fish but luckily he was clever enough to pick out a single zebra danio as he'd already seen that my tank contained a small school of them. So in the end it did no harm to me or my fish, I still have the fish and he was happy to have contributed to my tank. :D

However, I would never encourage someone to buy a live fish as a gift (unless the person who will be recieving it goes along and picks it out and has a cycled tank ready for it with suitable tankmates back home) and I wouldn't want to be bought one either - unless I was there etc and they just paid for it so they feel like it's their gift (this happened with my rubbernose plec which my aunt bought for me but I picked it out :) ).

i bought my brother a fish as a gift but it went into my tank. He doesnt have his own yet.

I'm very practical and severely lack sappiness....

My tank is my recreational outlet and I'd prefer to be the single hand at guiding it's personality (well... me and the fish...).

I voted 'no' as well. We just had just set up our tank a month earlier and it was barely finished cycling (with a few mollies and platies) and were getting exciting about purchasing some different speicies, when i had my birthday. Friends of ours knew about the tank so thought i'd be overjoyed with a present of.. fish. I was soo upset.. we got more mollies and platies! And sick ones at that! Two of them died within the first few days. While I appreciated the thought.. i let them know that next time I need to pick out my own!

No, unless the person buying the fish had some idea on what i already had in my tanks, how much stocking space i had left and the conditions in the tank.
I'd hate it if sombody bought me a common plec for example because i realy don'y have the space in my tanks for a another common plec and i wouldn't have the heart to rehome it once it had been given to me- it wouldn't be very nice for the fish either.
Also i only give people fish when i know they know how to look after them properly and have the proper equipment and didn't have any deseases running in their tank/s- i'd never give fish to sombody who has never before had fish.

Absolutely not. I'm way too interested in fish to have someone else pick them out for me :p
I actually got a betta as a gift last Christmas from a family friend. She gave me a good sized bowl for him and some pretty gravel, which was nice, but I really didn't want another veiltail to take care of unless he was a really unnusual colour... and of course, the one she got me was a typical blue and red betta. I appreciate the thought, but I don't think it's appropriate to get someone a gift they have to take care of unless it has been hinted at or asked for :p

Depends on whose giving the gift. Lol, I guess that's what emergency tanks are for though... Of course, with my luck, someone would give me something I can't/don't want, like 'hey, you have a big tank (30 g  woo, really big  ) here's a baby oscar!!! I know you like cichlids, so, TA DA!'

This is why I've pretty much set myself to a making a list of everything I would like as a present, and then giving it to people. Cash is also accepted in the land of Ninja :shifty:

I don't like getting fish as gifts, unless they're from my dad (He's the only person who gets me fish, luckily) :D

If friends and relatives got me fish, I'd be stuck with a bunch of swordtails and danios :p

nope, last time my dad bought me fish, he overstocked me like crazy, i was already way overstocked with 3 goldfish in a 10 gallon, and he bought me 3 more.

I wouldn't mind getting the money for the fish, but I'd like to pick it out myself.

From what my friends know about fish, I'd probably end up with a friggen painted glass fish with TB.
I wouldn't mind if a friend gave me a card with a little fake coupon in it saying that they owe me one fish, so we could go to the store one day and make a day of picking one out, but as for them picking it out? Nice gesture, but I don't take to the idea of buying someone a living thing as a gift.

ha!! everyone hates my fascination with my fish so i'm kinda lucky! i would never buy anyone else something as i wouldn't like the responsibility o that, overstocking, introducing disease, poorly fish etc
