No, I would consider a 20 gallon a smallish tank and a 75+ gallon tank a big tank

Not really, but it will be suitable for most tropical fish you will find,(tetras,rasporias,barbs,danios) in moderation. I wouldn't go with any cichlids, well maybe a couple shell dwellers but not for a beginner. Make a nice tetra tank with some java moss and java fern. Or plastic decorations.

I'd consider a 20 gallon tank pretty dang small. When I first started I thought of it as huge, but after looking around at the true sizes needed for medium and large fish, there isn't all too much you can do with a 20 gal.

My tank is a 30 gal and it fits me just fine, so for a beginner it's a perfect side Get some Guppies and Molly's (I'm a live barer person ) and you're set

I have a 15 gallon. I think it's very small, but I don't want to spend a ton on stocking, supplies, and plants since I'm only 14. Even if it's not "big" , I personally think mine looks great and I'm fine with a small tank.
It all depends on your financial situation, how much time you have on your hands, how big your house is, and the fish you wish to keep.

Well, its 90L... its probably the average aquarium size owned by the average aquarist (roughly a 3 foot tank).

So I don't think its small, its average,a nd there's nothing wrong with that.

I only have a slightly larger tank (106L) and thats big enough for me.

Very true!

If you have space for a 75, get a 75, you'll end up getting one anyway as your knowledge expands and you want more fish and/or plants. Bigger tanks are also more stable, as theres a larger water column. Much more forgiving for a new aquarist as things take longer to manifest, giving you more time to react.

When youre starting out a 20g seems like a big deal, but you quickly realise that even a 75, isnt really all that big. My 4ft 75 was shoved firmly into perspective by the person i bought from, as they had it sat next to their brand new 6ftx3ftx3ft behemoth. That, is whats considered a big tank these days, and that is by no means the biggest either....

Thanks! The reason I was asking was because i got one for Christmas, Setting it up tomorrow but want to know if it is worth taking back for a bigger one. its a good size and not to big for my room so I might stick with this one.

I was disapointedd about not being able to keep an Angelfish. I might buy one in the future as I love those fish. at Petsmart yesterday I asked a fish lady if she could tell me what I can stock with a male betta. She told me any fish along the top or bottom row of fish tanks that they have passed the male guppies. So I looked and gonna get some schooling fish (Tetras, Danios, Rasboras) etc. But Im taking it slow. Starting off with the betta. And maybe the neons or danios.

it really depends on what you want to stock.

A 20 gallon tank is huge if you are stocking with micro / small fish

I have a 20 gal myself and with platies in it, it looks small, but if i put my celestial pearl danios on it, it would look huge

To me, 20 gal / 90 litres is a perfectly adequate size for a beginners tank, in fact, its a good size beginners tank, (stocked correctly)

Are we talking 20 US or imperial gallons here? As you (the OP) is from Canada, I'm guessing you have a 20 US gallons, hopefully it is a 20 long (30x12x12 inches) 71l...

A good size to do one schooling midwater fish and a small group of bottom dwellers.
