Answer was actually yes,(Dho!) they said i could get a few more convicts... Jeeezzz, so yesterday i went and picked up another convict (pink) which i believe to be a male (my zebra convict is a female) figuring if i got my first convict a mate, maybe the jewel would back off a bit, but nope, not at all, but this new convict does not back down like my first one, they puff out their gills at each other going back and forth. I dont know what i am going to do, i find myself happy with the activity of the jewel (very active!) but i have a passion for convicts... Do ypou think maybe i could put up a divider in my tank? I wish their was a way to discipline fish, Tell them No No! lol

P.S. ALSO YESTERDAY I PURCHASED A COOL PIECE OF WOOD FROM PETCO, IT WAS IN THE REPTILE SECTION, I ASKED THE LADY IF IT WOULD BE ALRIGHT TO PUT IN THE FISH TANK AND SHE SAID YES, SO I GET HOME AND TRY TO PUT IT IN, AND FIRST OF ALL IT FLOATED! SECOND AFTER THINKING MAYBE I COULD JUST WAY IT DOWN WITH SOME ROCKS, I NOTICED IT WAS MAKING MY TANK CLOUDY FROM DUST OR WHATEVER...

BUT ANYWAY, WILL THE WOOD EVER GET WATERLOGGED? AND NOT NEED TO BE WEIGHTED DOWN? IS THIS NOT GOOD FOR MY FISH TANK? HAS ANYONE EVER DONE THIS BEFORE?

THANKS AND I AM GREAT FULL FOR ALL THE GREAT ADVICE I RECEIVE ON THIS FORUM...

The new convict might not be backing down and flaring but that's only temporary. In time, if he doesn't back down the jewel will have enough and kill it. You can take that to the bank. The flaring is just posturing and once the jewel finds that out...

What size tank do you have? If it's anything less than a 75g I wouldn't put a divider up. I think you'll just have to make a decision on which to keep, unfortunately. I know you've heard from others that it will work but I just don't think it will. If you get a mating pair of convicts then it will be much much worse in there. The convicts won't back down then and in most likliehood, the jewel will flee for a moment but after a while of being cornered will turn and attack killing your convict that harass him. After that, he will definitely kill the one left over because of his experience with the previous one.

Not sure about the wood. Is this just regular driftwood? If so it can take weeks to get waterlogged enough. I don't know anything about reptile decorations as far as being aquarium safe. It sounds like you didn't clean it before putting it in? If you did and it still clouds the water I would definitely take it out then.

With wood you'll need to weigh it down in a bucket of water and leave it for a few days... change the water in the bucket once or twice a day.. and after a couple days it should be water logged, and shouldnt cloud your tank water..

As for adding more fish.. I don't think that was a good idea.. there's a chance that the new convict too will bully the other convict that was cowering in the corner..

Don't ask the fish store for advice.. they just want your money and will tell you whatever will get them more money.

Yea, don't know why i forgot to...

Have not seen any of this, but regardless i have to make a decision soon...

In your opinion, which fish should i keep? Should i go with the Pair of convicts, who seem pretty average (just trot round the tank as most fish would) or the Jewel (Who has the mean streak, and is very hyper. showing lots of personality) and maybe get another Jewel or compatible fish?

I Really dont know if youll find a tankmate for the jewel..

the only thing that might work would be another jewel... even then it might be tough to find one compatible with the one you have now..

it's probably easier to get rid of 1 fish rather then 2..

i have 3 jewels and a breeding pair of convicts with a pair of firemouths 2 oscars 4 angels 2 clown loach 1 cory and lots of baby convicts all get on fine in a 400 ltr tank convicts tend to keep the jewels in check but the male convict is just as big as jewels good to watch had them together for months now never had a casualty yet but maybe time will tell

if its overstocked why are my levels all ok, all about 3-4 inch apart from oscars that are about 2 inch, but they will be coming out when they get bigger and put into a 500 litre tank on there own they are only in there for now to try an cull my convict fry and around 4-5 month what would you suggest is not overstocked because like i said not had any problems do regular 30% water changes
