would this work provided the water return pipe was above the water level , if not what , problems would i have in the event of a power cut ,

You would also need to ensure the water level was always adequate to have an overflow, if not, the pump will empty the sump, run dry and burn out. I think a lot of sump users have submersed pumps with float switches to guard against that kind of thing.

that looks fine. I would go for an internal pump as they are cheaper. as lateral said, you need to keep the water topped up

excellant , i was hoing it would be ok , what would i need to consider if i wanted it to run say 3 tanks ??

if of the same sump you just need to connect the 3 returnes to one end and havre either one big pump ore 3 little pumps returning water to the tank. just make sure that the sump can handle any water draining off from the tank(s) in the event of a power cut

ste :)
