I was fantasizing about what my next tank would be. I would love to do this eventually, but not sure if it would cause too much aggression.

I would love to get a 20gallon long tank and seperate it into 3 parts.
5 gallon on one side, 10 gallons in the middle, then 5 gallons on the other side.

I would want to put a male in both of the 5 gallon parts and then have a sorority in the 10.
IF I could do this, would this cause too much aggression in the females? Would they fight with eachother trying to get the attention of the males?

That sounds like an awsome idea!! Make sure the girls section is well planted and stuff, maybe get dividers that aren't see through?

BUT what if I couldn't get dividers like that and could only get the ones where the bettas would be able to spot eachother.
Would the females become aggressive towards one another to get the attention of the males?
I'd love to actually do this eventually, but would want to make sure if I only got regular see-through dividers that they'd be ok (the fish I mean) :)

And of course I'd most definitely provide plenty of hiding spots in the girls part! heh I've read enough of all of you folks' posts to know that much at least hehe. :good:

I personally would worry about the dividers shifting or a male squeezing through or jumping over. I guess the best dividers would be colored/translucent glass or acrylic cut to fit and siliconed in.

My partner has just divided my 24G tank into 4 to keep my Bettas in. He used perspex and sanded it down, then siliconed it in. Quite a job and took him a while to do but it's nice and sturdy. The perspex has a frosted effect so the Bettas may see a little of each other. If it becomes a problem, we are just going to put plants in to help cover the divider.

So no one knows if the females would become aggressive though? lol

Also kinda offtopic.. how do you feed all of those females and make sure they all get something?
My bettas now are greedy little oinkers and I can't even imagine what it would be like in a sorority tank. I could just picture placing a few pellets into the tank and it'd be the most colorful feeding frenzy ever :p lol
How would you prevent a female from eating too much?
When getting females for the tank...should you put them in all at once? If so.. cycling with ammonia adding it in every day would probably be best right? Since it would build up enough bacteria to deal with a larger load of fish.

I know I'm rambling a bit and asking a ton of questions, but hey! It's good to get as much info as possible for future reference! heh

Gosh.. I need to stop talking about it b/c I keep wanting it more and more and more! Hve it heavily planted.. get a CO2 kit for it so the plants are lush. OOO get one of those nifty fake root system looking things for it if it's not too big so I could have that natural look. *sighs* I'm just gonna have to settle for dreaming about it right now.

Muahaha... reviving my old topic b/c I have some questions...

What would be the best way to heat and filter a tank set up like this?

I was thinking perhaps get 2 bubble filters for each of the 5 gallon sections, then get a HOB for the middle.
But I'm not sure about heating though since I wouldn't want to put too much movement on the 5 gallon sides to get the warm water moving throughout the entire tank. But then I thought putting it right smack in the middle horizontal would work? Think there would be enough water movement to heat the sides?
If I did this I'd probably make my own dividers for it. Get some mesh from a hobby shop so I have some control on how large the holes are in the divider (don't think the store bought divider holes are large enough imo).

So would placing the heater in the dead center be ok you think?

We're going to the petstore tomorrow so I can start pricing how much this lil dream of mine will cost.. muahahahaha.

Well... we went to Superpets today and I saw the 20gal long. It's alot smaller than I was picturing it in my head. I might just ditch the whole idea of splitting it 3 ways and just make a really big sorority :D

OMG they had the cutest females I've ever seen!!!!!!!
You know the bettas in the stores are usually almost their full grown length.. well these females were SO tiny I mistook them for guppies until I looked at them closer.
They were SO freaking cute I wanted to cry.
They couldn't have been more than an inch long a piece. GOD I wanted them SOOOOO bad!!! Looked like a few of them were CT females. Probably too soon to tell, but not sure what the other tail types were.
SIGH!
Bf asked if I could've put some in with Afia, but I don't think she'd be very accepting of teeny little females on her side of the tank. SIGH... I wish though..... they were just too adorable.
