I have a 55 gallon tank with 3 rams in it right now. I would like to add 3 keyhole cichlids and 3 apistos.

Would this be okay to do? Also, what are some suggestions on the different types I can put in here?

Thanks

It should work...You could get a bunch of apisto like cacatudes, panda dwarf,, etc...If you want to see pics and info about species of appisto check out fishprofiles.com....

How many would I be able to stock this tank with? Could I get even more apistos, rams, and keyholes?

Myke, you need to consider how much real estate there is to offer, keeping in mind that these fish all share the bottom of the tank, and then make a judgement call based on common sense. These fish will pair off and will likely start to breed. If you don't have enough space for each pair to make a comfortable terrtiory then there will be high levels of stress in the tank. I personally would keep it one pair each of two different types, but I am someone who tries to provide as much space as I can for cichlids.

I didn't realize that they were all bottom fish. I think I am going to go with one pair of my favorite ones.

What are some bigger cichlids that I could put in this tank with the rams and either apistos or keyholes? Lead me in the direction and I will look up the fish.

Your combination of fish sounds good to me.
I have 2 german blue rams and the LFS told me to not put more in there because my males would then become aggressive :( .
But I am still considering bolivian rams. They are similar, just not quite as colorful.

There are lots of fish you could put with your combination. You'll have plenty of room and lots of fun filling a 55 gallon!

Check out www.fishprofiles.com and you can find out what all is compatible with each other.

Okay, now I am looking for two good sized cichlids besides a firemouth that I could put in this tank. Colors don't really matter to me, I just want a fish with a ton of character. I really like those midas cichlids but I guess they would be way too aggressive in this tank. Anything similar to a midas?

Some others that I like are cichlasoma salvini, red devils, blue acara, and green severums.

Any thoughts on these? Or any others like these?
