Ok, for my Rio 125 (32 UK Gallons) im thinking of keeping:
1x Ctenopoma acutirostre (African climbing perch or leopard bushfish)
3x yellow labs
2x pim pictus

if you go by the 1inch per gallon, i have 32 inches to play with, and when they are all grown i will have about 28-32inches of fish in there.
but, what i dont know is weather the pims and labs will bully the bushfish, as they are apparently quite shy fish...

If you think that it would/nt work, then please let me know, and if you think it wont, dont hessitate to surrgest something else.

Thanks in advance, Mikey

the yellow labs should be kept with other african cichlids in a species only tank so i think youll need to find a replacement for them.

havind sed that tho ive jus made a thread questioning something similar to that.

Aye.
ive seen people makeing threads, saying that theyve kept them with things outside of the african chichlid species, but if you dont think it will work then i wouldnt try it...
unless someone says differant lol :p
Cheers sam :good:

pim pictus get bit big for that tank? i'm not sure how big they actually get.

but i'd advise against the labs aswel.

:good:

Well they get 6" (from the profile on this forum), but ive never seen them get over 5"...

Why wouldnt it work in your oppinion?
I dont see why it wouldnt (unless the bushfish gets bullied), because the labs and pims can live together (as ive seen and heard about in many Mbuna tanks) and they are all reasonably the same size...

well thats what im trying to find out to be honest cos ive seen a few people mix them aswell.

at the moment as it stands, u shudnt do it. the africans prefer a much higher PH than other community fish.

but, and im sure im risking a serious flaming lol.

i think some africans wont need as higher PH as they once did because they have been bred in aquariums and adapted accordingly.

i could be totally wrong about that tho and apparently u dont see negative effects from keeping fish in unsuitable conditions untill later in there life so its probably best to be safe and not do it.

and im rambling haha. sorry im jus trying to make sense of it myself.

Anything else you could surrgest then?
i dont want a tank with nothing going on...but i dont like the communitys that you allways see...like with a shoal of neons and some angels...
id love to have chichlids, but i caouldnt keep any in my size tank could i?
Mikey

There are plenty of cichlids you could keep. What are the tank dimensions?

BTW, 'inch per gallon' definately doesn't apply here. It applies to slim bodied fish under 5" with average activity levels and waste output, if it applies at all. None of the fish fit those categories :p

well you could go with the yellow labs and the pictus but yea its too small for a species tank..

have to admit tho i dont kno about pictus and if they cant take the higher PH youd give the labs then a syno cat might work better?

youd have to ask in the african section about how many labs. probably 3 or 4.

theres shelldwellers too if you like cichlids but i kno nothing about them so youd have to go to the african section again.

you could have quite a selection of them too. there jus like mini malawis.

i think andywg has bush fish. sure it was him that was trying to talk me into them so you could maybe ask him about tank mates.

Well ive posted a question in the gourmai etc. section.

about the shell dwellers: i really dont think i could get anything like that near me....
the only shop that have africans just say "mixed malawis" on the labels, nevermind shelldwellers.

Thanks for you help

Even though pictus stay under 6", doesn't mean they can fit in a small tank. They are extremely active and constantly dart around the tank. a 32 gallon just wouldn' give them enough space. According to the "inch per gallon" GUIDELINE you could fit them in there, but as feeshy pointed out, with these fish and others you've suggested don't go by this rule. IMO the minimum tank size for a pictus should be a 55 gallon, larger is better though.
HTH!

Wait...why aren't you putting your goldfish from your 5 gallon into this tank? :/ I'm sure you know by now that they are in a too small of tank.

Aye, they are too small for that tank.
they're going to my friends pond next week, my mums takeing them.
they're about 1-2" long id say.

Yeah, im not going to be able to keep those fish anyway...the perch/bushfish will be bullied.
Thanks everyone :good:
