Right, Im probably pushing my luck with this stocking list, but advice or suggestions welcomed.

Juwel Rio 300, so 121cm x 61 x 51 = 300 litres or 79 US gallons.

Juwel internal with all the bits for filtration and an external (yet to be decided which one)

I would like to have: 2 Severums, 4 Jurupari and how ever many firemouths I could comfortably fit.

Would that work? To overstocked? Too much aggression? Would be getting all from youngish so growing up in each others company.

If this is too ambitious let me know and suggest something else, although I want the sev's and Jurupari's LOL. Others optional.

Havent yet bought the tank, busting my budget big time if I do get it and frankly the lounge will have no breathing space with the 79 and 55g's, but hey who needs space right????

Hi, I have a 5x2x2 and I have two severum, two almost fully grown Angels and numerous smaller fish such as acara, keyholes, firemouth.. I often think its overstocked but not had any problems yet and tank been running over a year now. I would def go for the bigger tank, they look amazing when you finally get it set up as you want it. Maybe just add the Severum and pair of Firemouth to start with then see how it goes over the following weeks.

Personally I wouldn't mix the jurupari with non eartheating cichlids. You might find it's no problem, but at the same time, you could find absolute devastation.

Also, true jurupari can grow to one foot each, though the true species are rarely seen in shops. Do you have any pictures of the fishes you're intending to purchase? I would recommend you purchase a group of six juvenile Satanopercoids to avoid dominance issues. If you buy four fishes and one dies for whatever reason, you'll find the smallest fish in the group gets picked on literally until death.

Hey duncs, ok the closest I could find to the what are called jurupari in my local LFS is this :

Everything Ive read say they are a peaceful species, do you really think they could cause problems? If so can you recommend an eartheater that wouldnt be a problem. Ive got geo surinamensis (sold to me as tapajos, but clearly not) in my 55g that are extremely peaceful but fancied a different geo.

That fish is actually Satanoperca leucosticta - the most common mistake made by fish shops. Satanoperca jurupari are a more plain fish with no gill plate flecking.

My S. daemon, S. jurupari and S. pappaterra are particularly aggressive towards conspecifics. The only other cichlid I've kept them with is a Geophagus abalios.. and the Geo was so aggressive towards them that he had 6 similar sized Satanopercoids stuck in a corner.

The problem isn't their peacefulness necessarily - they only seem to be aggressive to conspecifics - but if they're getting chased around the tank by other fishes, they won't colour up properly and when they're stressed they're very prone to HLLE like most other blackwater cichlids.

Personally, if you were interested in keeping those fish, I'd buy 6 of them, some Corydoras, a Loricariidae plec and some South American tetras. Make a proper biotope affair. Blacken the water with peat, fill the tank with sand and bogwood.. and you'll be thoroughly rewarded :)
