Would There Be A Need For Something Like This?

I've used a UPS in a power outage here - only problem was i had the shutdown set to 2 minutes on it, so i had to press the "on" button every 2 minutes. d'oh. I've got it set to an hour now though  Be careful of which UPS you get - some will automatically shut down if there's less than a certain load (say 30 - 40 watts). The 15 minute time is usually the average for a standard pc / monitor - it'll be much extended with a lighter load.

Someone actually tried a UPS before on a forum (might be this one) and they found that it didn't work very well at all.

It was on a reef, but the problem would be similar on a FW. The load that is seen on an impeller (like that of a powerhead, or filter) is different to that of a computer (I can't recall exactly, but I think the PH was a reactive load instead of an impedant load, though I may be way out with that). The bottom line is, when they tried it and cut the power, the pumps died too.

You may be able to use one for an airpump to ensure some circulation around the filter...

Well, I had a power outage of about 90 mins one afternoon. I had a UPS rated for about 30 mins for a computer and a monitor. What I had plugged into it was 2 Marineland Penguin HOB filters. And I had no problems whatsoever, filters didnt stop running once.
