" undectable ammonia spikes cause diatoms, if phosphates & nitrates do cause algae then i would very much like to hear your explanation as to why so many people can dose these nutrients and run an algae free tank!
Radar has pointed out above a good tank, for more just take a look in the aquarium journals section.

Yes I think that the undetected ammonia might be the main cause of the Diatoms.

Algae needs all the same things plants need to grow. So phosphates & nitrates among other can help algae grow. It is all about keeping the balance. Too much will be problems too light will cause problems. You need to find the balance. I messed up with keeping the balance. I did not dose my tank regularly with Excel I would do more one day, less the next, then skip a day. i did it at different times of the day. My light would be kept on longer too but then shorter other days. I messed up the balance in my tank and well that's when algae moved in.

I see now what I need to do.
Cut back light, use a timer,
do more water changes twice a week not once
just keep cleaning the algae when i see it.
Dose excel the same amount same time everyday.

My algae problem is not out of control. I just have some and I want little to none.

Thanks guys.

exactly, and that is where most people get confused, nutrients feed algae, they dont cause algae, and that is a big difference, which you clearly stated above, and another factor (NH4+) is the cause :good:
