Fed the fish and 30 minutes later look over at tank and parki is dead on bottom surrounded by barbs, with an eye missing,

water stats
20-30 nitrates
0 nitrites
150 hardness
180 alk
ph 7.5 (kinda high)

Any idea to what the hell just happened?

this is really sad, female is swimming around all of the bottom of the tank lower plants as if looking for him or something. They both used stay up on top. She is focussing alot on the spot i removed him from

That so sad bless her, sorry don't know what happened not enough to go on. R.I.P.

What a shame :/ You obviously didn't notice the fish looking unwell before ?

Your water and pH is absolutely fine - they prefer a higher pH / harder water anyway :)

How long have you had them ?

They eye would have been eater almost certainly after death by the barbs.

nothing was wrong with him at all. He was fine one minute, and dead as a hammer the next. Showing beautiful colors and everything. The only thing i can get, is he got into a fight or was chasing another fish and either slammed into something or lost a fight with some barbs.

only going on 4th week of having them :(

Quite odd, but I do find it unusual and something definitely wasn't right. I think it very unlikely that the barbs had anything to do with it.

I recently lost 2 red rainbows also for no apparent reason - but am starting to wonder if they perhaps had an internal ailment. Even though the other fish in the tank are and have since been 100%.

Some things sometimes can't easily be explained.

agree, but usually when ill, something will be shown as a sign like lack of eating or something, he had just ate 30 minutes prior as normal.
