I've not had my snail for very long - only about 3 weeks. The first couple of weeks he was zooming around my tank, seemed really happy in there. Then I had the crisis last Weds with the heater packing up in that Brillux tank and the following day the tank temp was quiet low (out of the safe range) so I had to borrow the small heater out of my smallest tank and put it in the Brillux as I have only 1 fish in the small tank whereas the Brillux is a community tank.
Anyway, the snail at that point was still moving around the tank, although a bit slower than before.
I bought a new heater on Saturday and installed it into the Brillux and returned the smaller heater to the other tank. By Monday the Brillux tank temp was back to normal and the fish were happier although I'd lost two, which I half expected and surprised I didn't lose more than that.
The thing is, since Sunday, I haven't seen my snail move at all! He's closed up shop and refusing to come out. I don't even know if he's still alive in there
I've put a small bit of lettuce in there but that's been untouched. I also placed an algae wafer next to him hoping that the smell might coax him out - but no such luck. The fish ate that.
I read through some notes online and it said to take the snail out and smell it. If it stinks then the snail has died. Well, I had a sniff of it last night (glad I was on my own LOL
) and couldn't smell anything. I put him back and this morning he's still in exactly the same spot I left him last night.
Is there any way of coaxing a snail out of its shell? My tank temp is at 26 degrees. Should I increase it a bit?
Or is this perfectly normal? I thought they had to come up for air...so how can he stay in the water for 5 days now without coming up to the top?
Just a bit worried...
