One of my guppies has a red "thing?" (worm?) that is protuding outside of his body,at the level of right lateral abdominal. I transfered him in a small tank and I"m using on him Parashield. Initialy I thought that is nematodes, but I understood that usually they are going out of the fish through the annus, not from the body. Any help?

Here's what I wrote on the chat room...

There are other external parasites that hang on the body and gills so it still could be a parasite.

I would really need to see a photo to know for sure. I have a book of fish parasites I could compare it to.

There are even small leaches that will cling to fish. Was this something that wasn't there then just showed up?

The anchor worm comes to mind...but there are others.

Okay...so you said in chat that it's not the anchor worm...Can you do a photo?

Is the fish bloated. As internal parasites can also burst out. Take a closer look to see if you can see a hole where
the worm is hanging.

Does the red worm look like a single strand of hair.

Anchor worm will have a Y shaped tail.

I was researching this today and that's what I read about. I have a picture in my parasite book that looks like the worm is attached but according to the book it's actually coming out from the inside.

If a fish gets infested with camallanus worms they can burst out of the stomach. Awful.
