Hi,

I want to make an aquarium about 7feet high 12feet long and 2feet wide. I feel that 12mm thick glass sealed with silicon would do. But I am not too sure about it.

Is there a way to work out the suitable glass thickness w.r.t. dimensions and outward water pressure.

Thanks

MA

thats a small aquarium :shifty: if you find out from somewhere else how to work this out, let us all know :)

Assuming you haven't got the dimensions confused, and you really want a tank that is 7 feet from top to bottom:

The higher you go with the glass, the thicker the glass needs to be. I have been told that 12mm will do up to around 30", and 15mm is needed to get to 3 feet. I would expect that 7 feet is going to be nasty and into the realms of very thick glass.

Most people tend to use acrylic for those sizes as it doesn't have the green tint to it and is stronger and more flexible (though costs more). You could ask our sponser Windosr Aquatics, but I think you will find that glass for that sort of size is going to cost a small fortune.

Comparing an aquarium you hope to have built to one that cost 12.8 million Euros and is a display at a hotel is a bit of a no brainer really, unless you have won the lottery recently.

If you want a really large aquarium, you should look at Okinawa in Japan where they have a 7.5 million litre tank in which they are hoping to breed whale sharks. The acrylic window on that is around 60cm thick.
