That would be a female caridina babaulti, the stipe on its back is too thick for an amano, and it doesn't have the tell-tale spots. It also doesn't have the same body shape or legs as a bamboo/rock shrimp.

Their care is pretty much the same as cherry shrimp, and they are gregarious so she would be more happy with some friends (though she'll survive just fine without any).

Thanks for your help guys. I think the best thing is to go to the shop I got him free from and try and spot more in the tanks and ask for them ones.

Got another free one from the shop. Two in the tank now and they hang around with each other! The LFS said they were Filter Shrimp or Wood Shrimp.

The look exactly like that albeit a tiny bit smaller but they may just be young. So BethK was right!

Do they both have fans? It really does look like a babaulti in your picture.

if it is a wood shrimp then they can easily starve to death. be sure to direct food at it. they filter food from the water using the fans on the front legs, you may not see them once they find a place that seems a good spot for food. if they dont get enough food they will die....

BTW, Amano shrimp are about 2 inches long. Much bigger than most other shrimps. Not sure how big the wood shrimps are, but my Amano is pretty good size at ~2 inches.
