Hi

right i currently have a juwel rio 180ltr and have managed to get a fluval viecenza 260ltr, right so anyway

last week i started my fishless cycle of my new tank and i also put my big bit of bog wood in water, so i was letting the wood soak and once a day i was replacing the water that it was soaking in for clean water, it looked as if the water was clear after 8days of soaking so i pop'ed the wood into my fishless tank and the next morning my water is brown

anyone any suggestions i know its the wood but what should i do?

thanks

Calum

Hi and welcome, you say that you soaked it - did/were you boiling it, my latest piece I had to boil on and off for four days.

No leakage since. ;)

no i didn't boil it its rather large to try and boil it basically just fits in my tank so it would take near 200ltr's to boil this beast

I've heard that if you boil the wood for about 30 minutes or so it will leach out most of the tannins that are dying the water brown. However, i personally quite like my aquarium water slightly tinted. It's actually beneficial for many species of fish.

Well, I soaked my piece of wood for 2 weeks straight, than I boiled it for 3 days, than soaked it for another day.

When the wood is submerged in hotter water (boiling water) the pores on the wood open more, allowing more tannins (brown stuff) leak out faster.

So that is why boiling the wood has a more significant effect on removing tannins form the wood.

Even after the entire wood soaking process I did, I still have some tannins leaking out.

Since you are in a fishless cycle, I would suggest to take the wood out, and soak it until the cycle is done to get more tannins out.

Since there is really no need to have the wood in the tank right now.

Geesh, must be a biggy if you would need 200lt

The fish do like the tannins though and if it gets too much just do more water changes ;)

yeah its a big bit of wood, tbh its really the shape that would cause me to need all that water, its forming the centre piece of my tank

so suggestions are

1. take wood back out and leave soaking for longer? - if i do this should i just repeat what i was doing with regards to changing the soaking water daily?
2. leave the wood in there and do water changes until the water remains clear?

would the tannins affect my sand? its a very light coloured sand and i wouldn't want it changing colour?

Hi,just keep changing the water,it'll get there sooner than you think and most fish like the tannins as someone already mentioned.

The tannins shouldn't affect the colour of your sand,I've got playsand in one of my tanks with bogwood that leached for ages, just remember to keep poking and disturbing the sand to stop the buildup of bacteria.
