why does a shrimp need to malt? does it grow out of its shell or something

Basically yes!

As they grow the shell doesn't get any bigger but the shrimp does so they cast off the old skin and whats left hardens to form the new shell.

Im ok with that, becuase im pretty understocked and have 3 filters running on my tank im quite happy to stock up at the moment, but thans for the tip
