I'm getting a 5 gallon tank for Christmas. I had intended for it to be for bettas, but now I find myself itching to put something else in it. I want to stay strictly freshwater, no brackish or anything. I have no idea what I could put in it other than bettas... I don't want dwarf pencilfish, or dwarf gouramis, or honey gouramis. I like pygmy cories, but I need something else to go with them.
Like I said, I want to stay with freshwater, and I don't want any wild caught fish.

Any ideas? Anyone else have a 5g tank set up with something other than bettas in it?

I'd go for a dwarf puffer, but unfortunately, if you get one of those you can't have anything else. Maybe a wild betta species to spice things up? Mosquito fish? Killifish of some kind?

Ohh, mosquito and and killifish sound interesting.
I didn't know killies could fit in 5g.

I considered dwarf puffer, too, but there was something that kept me from getting one... can't remember what it was though. Maybe I'll research them again.

DPs are great, cute little suckers.
Here's a good site about killifish... visiting it almost makes me want some!

Hi CatLover :)

Five gallons is not much water, but there are still a number of fish that would be fine in there. Also, African Dwarf Frogs are interesting pets, but require a completely covered tank to keep them from jumping out.

I would suggest some combination of the following: guppies, endlers, dwarf corys, kulii loaches, shrimp, snails, and/or a honey gourami. You couldn't have all of them, of course, but you could still have an attractive and interesting combination.

If you limit your collection to farm bred or tank raised species, you are limiting your choices considerably since most tropical fish are wild caught. :D
