when i wake up in the morning, i grab a coffee and sit in front of my tank to check my fish and to basically wake up.

this morning was no different except my plants were all floating around i noticed a zebra danio floating at the surface :(. no odd spots, colors etc, looked fine apart from i think something nibbled part of its tail whilst dead.

i immediately checked my water and its fine. small amount of nitrate but everything else is perfect. nether the less i did a 50% water change and all is well. temp is as it always is, 79f.

now im sure my water didnt kill the danio but i suspect what happened between my plecos might have. they must have had a jolly old time in there to up root my plants and totally change the appearance of the sand.lol

any idea of cause of death?

EDIT: THIS IS A DOUBLE POST, CAN ADMIN DELETE PLEASE. THANK YOU.

I am not sure about zebra danio's but I am having a problem with giant danio's it seems once a female is ready to spawn the others are killing her! was it just a single one or do you have more.

How old was the fish.
How many fish and which type do you have in the tank?

i have / had 12 altogether. just the 1 died. 11 are very healthy, full of color and some have a bigger anal? fins with distinct color/markings on them. i had them from a small size and since the 3-4 weeks ive had them they have grown to full size. <---- i think anyway. they are about 2 1/2 inches

i dont think the danios are very old, when i bought them they were quite small. ive had them 3-4 weeks and there huge in comparison! about 2.5 inches.

other fish include 3 corys, 1 gn, 1 bn, 2 clown plecos.

no signs of ill health on the dead fish or any other in the tank. no odd behavior either, from any fish.

water stats are perfect, water temp is a constant 79f, tank is 4ft long, 50ukg, sand, lots of wood, caves, live plants.

i think the plecos were going on a mad one and one got caught up in it overnight? i cant think of anything else it could be. the dead fish was a bit smaller than the others, yet i do have a tiny danio mooching around the tank and he's fine.i think he is to shy to '' get out there and grab food '' than the others but i do see him eating, more so from the bottom when the corys are picking at there pellets.

i do feed everyday and enough so they all get some. i may over feed a little for the sake of my plecos.i worry they dont all get some.esspecially my clowns. they dont come out so much since i introduced the 4-5 inch golden nugget and 5 inch female bn.

It's really hard to say then what caused the fish death.
He could of been the runt of the litter.

Keep a look out for when your fish go to the toilet.
Get back to the board if any fish look thin or bloated.
