ok, as i head into winter i face a strong possiblity of loosing power sometime during the winter. at this point i have 5 individual tanks on heaters, is there a way to keep the tanks and fish warm if i loose power mid winter. i know they will be ok with out a filter for a while.
mind you winter here i live in upstate ny where temps could dive to below 0 around here. please give me some ideas, other then little fishy sweaters for them.

Wrap the tanks in duvets, blankets etc to keep some of the heat in.

sounds obvious but keep doors closed and try to keep the room as warm as possible,
You can also wrap the tanks in bubble wrap or blankets to keep the heat in,

If it was me I'd buy a small portable gas heater or get in some wood/coal if you have a fireplace or woodburner. -if the rooms are warm and cosy the water shouldn't drop too much

put a blanket around the tank to save the heat being lost through the glass and hood. or try some of that reflective foam that you put down the back of radators b&Q do it in the uk but i take it your over the pond so home depot should do it

Battery powered air pump is allways a handy thing to have too

I would guess if your tanks don't have complete covers, (ie. if they are the ones with the lights just suspended above them), then get at the least some condensation covers to stop heat loss through evaporation.

When we had a power cut a while back i filled some 2 litre coke bottles with hot water (from gas cooker) then put lid on and placed these in the tank.

Kept temp up sweet.

thats a good idea, we cetinaly have the means to get a fire going and getting warm water. that would good for my fish. thank you

May I suggest an emergency vent free propane heater? I live in the mountains of Virginia and though we haven't had much snow the last few years , we've had some really bad ice storms where power was out for several days. The heaters kept the house nicely warm. as well as the tanks.

when i lose power my water and stuff still works..the reason is water pressure and natural gas to keep the water heater going. im going to remember the 2 litre idea because i just had a 6 hour power outage scare and my temp went from 79 to about 74...made me a little nervous!
