Window Screening As Filter Intake Strainer?

I was fooling around with a Magnum350 Canister filter last week and realized I didn't have an intake strainer. I didn't see it as being a huge problem because my archerfish seemed too large to be sucked in. Evidentally this wasn't the case. One of my smaller ones went in head first and was killed. Very sad that I made such a stupid mistake.

Anyway, I'd like to know if it is safe to use window screen over the intake tube as a temporary strainer. I'm in the middle of building some custom PVC plumbing and need something to hold me over for now.

As long as it is the fiberglass kind it is fine. The old metal type may leach into the water.

Use a piece of stocking or a piece of sponge.
