Can i add salt to my tank when i do a water change? I have 8 Auratus cichild and 5 tetras?

You can add aquarium salts to tanks for electrolyte imbalances to make the water less hard, and it helps with gill function etc, but i wouldnt suggest putting it straight into the water.

I bought a water pillow, basicall you soak it in aquarium salt water (not much concentration) and then put it into the filter area at the top near the carbon filter etc.

Then you recharge it every clean out every week.

Thats what the products state that ive bought, but im new so dont take my word until someone else who knows more comes here, if the fish in question come into contact with salt water sometimes it wont do much, I know mollys love salt in the water and it is best to keep them in a slightly salt water so they dont get finrot etc.

Tetras and cichlid i have no idea though, however im sure a small amount in the filter(proper aquarium salts) should simply make the water softer, and make the gills healthier, its for the electrolyte transfer that occurs in fish when they breathe etc

as a tonic salt has real uses. however if you have a healthy tank, it does squat to help your fish and is very nasty to some commonly kept tropical. its main use is filling the coffers of the LFS, much like saying you need to change our filter sponges every few months. unless there is a real problem salt can cure, and if your fish does not need brackish. why would fresh water fish need salt? the answer is often " because my LFS told me so".

Agreed.

Also Paul, which tetras do you have with the auratus? Melanochromis Auratus are very very aggressive fish and i can't think of any species of tetra which would be happy alongside them? Sounds like a bad combination to me. Have you had any problems?

I have a transparent tetra and a glowlight tetra. My tank is 29 gal tank. No problems.

I don't add salt at all for my freshwater tank, if I have a poorly fish I give it a salt bath rather than salt the whole tank. My molly tank is salted with marine salt every water change and the fish are very happy, but if it weren't mollies I wouldn't do it.
