will this light work?

ok, i'm planning and obtaining the materials to build myself a breeding tank, i got it all sussed and can start building very soon, however, i got a spare strip light that is meant for use under kitchen top-cupboards etc, will this be ok to use or do i have to fork out on a proper light?

I'd use it. I have a few lighting the bottom tanks in my fish room.
