Firstly I'll start by saying sorry for asking a question that gets asked every 10 seconds!

I'm setting up a comunity tank and my plan is to get a selection of fish from the following list, could someone just confirm that these fish would go together without problems, and also if I have too many bottom dwellers or top dwellers etc???

Khuli loach
Bristlenose Plec
Leopard Cory
Yamato Shrimp
Neon Tetra
Gardineri Killifish
Neon Dwarf Gourami
Hatchetfish
and a few Malasian Trumpet snails.

I have tried to research this list and hopefuly there is a fairly even mix here?

Oh and my tank is densely planted with rock clusters, pots, tubes and lots of hiding places.

PH is 6.8 and temperature is currently 26C

I would get a few more, of less species.

Go for the kulhis or the corydoras, rather than both; you can still have the ancistrus assuming your tank is big enough; you haven't told us the size of it!

Again with the surface dwellers; go for the hatchets, or the killies (definitely no other surface dwellers, if you go for those, they're quite aggressive), or the gouramis.

I dont plan on putting all of them in, thats just my short list. I was just interested to know what goes with what so I can rule some of them out and narrow down the list.

My tank works out around 65litres.

In that case, I would go for the kuhlis rather than the cories, and leave the ancistrus.

Then either the killies or the dwarf gouramis; 65l is on the small side for hatchets, IMO.

I'm not sure whether the killies would be ok with neons, but the gouramis would. Leave the neons until the tank's been set up for a while; they often do very poorly in new tanks, even if they're properly cycled.

Ok, I've changed my mind again, could I have corys as a bottom fish, neon tetras as a mid to bottom fish, neon dwarf gouramis as a mid to top fish and a few guppys as a sort of all over the place mental fish?

The only problem I see is that the gouramis will eat the guppy fry...

How hard or soft is your water?

Everything will eat the guppy fry, including the guppies.

With a 65l tank, a group of normal sized cories will take up a large portion of your capacity. If you go for something like c.habrosus (my new favourite fish in the world), you get all the fun of daft cories, and still have room for the rest. Another dwarf cory species that would be suitable is c.hastatus. Can be difficult to find, be well worth it.

I have looked at the dwarf corys and they look smart. Theres a guy down the road from me who breeds fish and he has some smudge spot and panda corys, obviously not as small as the dwarf cory but also not as big as other cory breeds.

Corydoras similis, the smudge spot, ought to get to about 2/2'5". The panda cories only get to an inch and a half or so, IME; they are quite sensitive though.
