I finally saved enough money to get a decent sized tank for more fish. I currently have everything I need and I even have a gourami! Now though, I'm thinking of getting more fish for the tank. So far, a black moor goldfish and an angelfish caught my eye. Trouble is, I don't know if they get along well. So will my gourami, black moor, and angelfish get along or will the fight to the death? If they can't, any suggestions on what fish get along with a gourami?

black moors are cold water and angels/gouramis are tropical  . fish to go with the gouramis would be tetras, corys, hatchets, ottos or Bristle bristle nosed plecs

Ah I see. So the black moore's out of the question already. Will the gourami and angelfish get along though? I've seen some aquariums with both of them living together peacefully.

Some angels will live with gouramis, some won't; Angels are cichlids and very definitely have their own characters!

More important for angels is tank size; they need one that is a minimum of 18" deep, as they do grow large.

How big is your tank? Some times they will not get along, but usually a "decent size" tank is like a 30 gallon regular, and to keep angels you would need something more like a 30 tall

30 gallons? Hmmm....mine is around 20 or so. So far, my dwarf gourami (I think that's what it is) is only around 3 inches and the angelfish I saw in the store is roughly the same size. Would a 20 gallon tank support both?

30 gallons? I have 3 15 gallon tanks and one of them has 2 angelfish and a gourami in it. They live peacefully together and are healthy as can be. Store owner said my angelfish wouldn't get so big (or tall for that matter). Prolly 3-4 inches.

I'm afraid there are no species of angel that get to only 3-4".

15 or 20 gallon tanks just aren't big enough for angels.

Pterophyllum leopoldi don't get much bigger than 4", my dad kept them for years and they did fine in a 29 gal tank (18" tall). I remember them being very unusual fish to see in shops at the time (about 15 years ago) and he travelled a fair distance to pick them up. Not sure if they're still as unusual.

Really? Dang it! How tall do they get? Some sites say 4-10 inches is all they can get up to.

Well whatever it is, I'm in favor of angels and gouramis living together. If you have a 30+ gallon tank then that's spectacular. In my opinion, 15 gallons is ok as well. My gourami and angelfish have been living together peacefully for nearly a year already.

I doubt if anyone would have P. leopoldi and not know! They are stil quite unusual in the trade; I've never seen any.

They do grow smaller than P. scalare or P. altum, that's true, but they're also more aggressive, so it's swings and roundabouts...

So basically, what you're saying is that whether the fish get along fine or not depends on the fish's personality, characteristics and tendencies right?

aside from being a cold water fish, goldfish also are extremely dirty fish as they have no stomach so whatever they eat literally goes right through them making any other fish with them extremely prone to disease. I have a 55 gallon with a gourami in it as well as bala sharks, giant danio's, pictus catfish, tiger barbs, head and tail light tetras, black neon tetras, a large pleco, platy's, and a rainbow shark..They all live very very happily together :) hope this helps..
