Hello, first time on these forums just got back into tropical fish after having a tank when i was younger, but now ive got the funds i can start up again. i started with a 5 gal tank which i had some leopard danios in but now ive upgraded to a 64 litre im going to use the 5 gal for a betta.

So far in my 64 litre ive got 7 leopard danios, 1 yoyo loach i believe i cant remember what the pet shop called it (did have 2 but 1 didnt look too energetic the day i got it and didnt really notice till i got it home and it died a few weeks after getting it) and 6 glass shrimp. Now i know theres these guidelines of inches of fish per gallons of water etc, but i don't know if this is more for the personal space of each fish or what, because i figure with my danios for example more fish for less room wont be such a problem because they are a schooling fish, and im intending on getting another 3 to give me 10 in total, to my surprise my yoyo loach actively schools with the danios, but i want to get atleast another one so hes got another loach. I've been thinking of either getting some tiger barbs or some cory cats, and id get a minimum of 5 barbs or 4 cats.

The tank ive got does seem really spacious, with alot of open water (its quite tall), and once my wood has soaked will have a nice amount of places to hide, ive got 6 live plants in there at the moment and will proberly buy a few more and group 6 of them together in a back corner.

so will 10 danios, 2 loaches, and either 5 tiger barbs or 4 cats be ok in this tank? can i stretch and add any more if i pick the right fish?

thanks!

Hi and welcome :good: I would have 6 loaches because they need a group.Leopard danios are nice and small so a grop of 10 should be fine.depends what cat fish you are thinking of getting ,if you are thinking of getting corys then 6 of them would be cool,if plecos then most plecos won't fit in there but I'm no expert.Tiger barbs need a 55 gallon tank and would not get along with leopard danios. You could probabbly add a centerpeice fish like a dwarf gourami or dwarf cockatoo chichlid.

good luck

Welcome to the forum Stubert.
Your proposed stocking levels are fairly close to the maximum for a small tank like that. The yoyo loaches will get a bit too big to stay in that tank so you need to either not get them or start thinking about where they will end up. They will not be able to stay in that tank very long but probably come to the store as little one or two inch fish. They grow to a 6 inch fish so they will overload your tank eventually. The inch per gallon guidance would say you are already overloaded since it uses the adult size of all fish as a standard. Fortunately it is a rather loose standard with plenty of room for figuring out a real stocking level that is acceptable.

Furry catfish : i wanted to focus more on the cats than the loaches so was just gonna keep 2 for company, but as i said the loach seems more than happy swimming around with the danios at the moment so i dont think ill even need 6! was thinking of corys btw, and if the barbs wont get on with the danios ill have to go with corys, because i love my danios! and im not so interested in a centre piece fish, but the fish shop is getting some dwarf chichlid's in for a friend of mine so i might end up being persuaded, i dunno tho will have to see when i get to the fish store for the next stocking.

oldman : if the loaches do get too big, my brother is turning his chichlid tank into a community soon, and its about 3 times the size of mine so im sure he will take them if i need to move them (if i dont have a bigger tank by then!) and if what ive stated is about right then thats ok, i hate the look of overcrowded tanks anyway so i wont overstock it to look at which should mean enough space for each type of fish.

oh and thanks for the welcomes.

Stubert??

Would you upgrade any time soon up to around 20-35 gallons? Maybe even 55?

If so you can keep ALOT more fish then you can in a 64 L :good:

Knox213??

Well, i live at home, so im stuck for space, theres a possible place in my room for a bigger tank but it means modding a small walk in wardrobe and ripping everything out of it. And buying the tank + equipment and a stand for it + decore will start to eat into the bank, but its definately in mind maybe in the new year ill have to see what i can get at what prices :fun: but considering i upgraded from a 5 gal to a 64 litre in a month cos i wanted bigger im sure ill end up wanting more once this tank is finished
