Tomorrow I'm going to rescue a CT from my LFS,so today i bought a 3g tank (12x8x8) for him (he's a juvie atm btw)

I was wondering, would i be okay not cycling if i used filter material/some gravel from an already established tank? And would it be okay to use water from that tank as well? (i may not use the water due to the differences in fish) its a community tank btw.

And also, i don't have a lid for the tank, will he be okay? especially when i put him in for the first time? if not.. Any advice?

I've never actually kept bettas. but I've been reading non stop, so i hope it'll be okay.. i just can't stand to see him all cooped up there :S

Using a bit of gravel and filter media should work out well. tbh i haven't had any probs placing my bettas in non-cycled tanks.

How much of a gap from the water to the lip of the tank do you have? cuz they can REALLLLY jump and i've had a betta jump tremendous distances. If you have about 2" to the the lip of the tank you would be ok. A lid is more than advised. (or just keep the water level low)

I have only ever cycled one tank before. All my others have been set up using cloned media and it has always worked great. Just keep an eye on the water stats for the first week or so. Wouldn't bother moving over gravel as there is very little bacteria there anyway. I've just set up a new tank for my betta due to arrive on Wednesday, and have popped a few guppies in there to feed the bacteria until he arrives! Sponges have been in my external canister for at least a month, thinking more like 7 or 8 weeks..... so they should be great!
