I currently have 2 red eyed red tailed puffers (1" and 2"), a south american puffer (1"), 2 flying foxs (both 2"), 8 tiger barbs (all 1"), 4 khuli loaches (all 2") and a clown loach (1"). I wanted to buy a polypterus senegalus, im aware thats its predatory so i wanted to know if it would eat any of the fish i currently have? The polypterus senegalus in the store is about 3-4".

Not a chance of this combo working.

Senegal bichirs are easily nipped by things as otherwise docile as dwarf cichlids; I've seen them stripped to the bone by "peaceful" Labidochromis caeruleus. Keeping them with South American puffers would be insane. The poor thing would be nipped to bits in days.

Remember: being predatory doesn't make a fish aggressive or defensive; indeed, many predatory fish are docile and very easily bullied. Senegal bichirs are extremely mild mannered fish that mostly eat insect larvae in the wild, and do well with rainbowfish, angels and other medium sized community tropicals.

Cheers, Neale

Thank you for the reply. So if i didnt have the south american puffer, do you think he would be ok in my tank? Im asking again because my friend wants my south american puffer, so i might be rehoming him. Thank you again for the reply :)

I wouldn't keep a bichir with any pufferfish. I'd only mix bichirs with harmless midwater fish.
