Will different Corys shoal

Hi,

Just a quickie, About to pop out to get some more Corys. Wanted to brighten things up with different varieties. Will they still shoal together and consider each other company.

I know different barbs that I've had in the past have eg Tiger, green, albino.

not all cories will shoal together; the few weeks all mine were alive, the pandas and aenus completely ignored each other. part of the reason you had such luck with the barbs (tiger, albino, green) is that those are all just color varients of the same species. cory cats are, generally speaking, all different species except for albino/bronze cories.

i hear its catch as catch can on interspecial shoaling.

My albino corys and panda corys swim together but the emerald ones don't because of the size difference i think

Most corys will shoal, and the various species that don't will still get along.
The only tank that has mixed species in at the mo that i have has peppered and panda corys and although i wouldn't say they shoal exactly they do hang out together from time to time.

I think size is the biggest factor in whether the various kinds of corys are comfortable with each other. When they are of similar size they do best. There is a lot of difference between pandas and bronze corys, for example. I think the little ones just stay clear of the bigger ones because they are so active that they are apt to push them around just by agitating the water nearby. It's not a matter that they are afraid of them though.

As you can see from my signature, I keep many different kinds of corys and most of them live in mixed schools in my tanks. They all get along well, but occasionally they will split off by species and play together.

I do keep my pandas and the dwarf species in their own tank, and the C. pygmaeus and C. habrosus don't seem to mind the presence of the pandas. There is a large size difference between them, and they don't school together at all, but they still get along fine.

I hope you let us know what kind of corys you decide to get.

Well they didn't have many in the end. Just 2 Bronzes and an Albino so got them all, for the very reasonable price(kinda end of line mix and match deal)

Your new corys will get along fine together. They are actually the same species, just different colors.

When the time comes that your lfs has more corys in stock, they will get along with them too, if you decide to get more.
