All they sell at petsmart in terms of snails are "black mystery snails," the name itself is a bit bizarre, I'm not sure if they're really a species or just a bunch of random snails they order and throw in a variety pack bin.

I honestly don't like snails, I think bugs in general are kinda gross. And I classify snails as bugs. But I'm gonna start using a thicker layer of sand substrate in my aquarium to give my convict more to dig with and my firemouth more to. I dunno. Mouth with. Whatever they do. They seem to like biting the sand and spitting it all over. I guess that's their way of digging, which is much different from the convicts.

I don't know if them doing that in its own is enough to turn the substrate to keep those toxic air pockets or whatever from building up (they're also both in different aquariums. The convict has been a bad girl, so I'm gonna be keeping her alone now. And her place in her old home has been filled with a little firemouth baby.) but if it's not, I read a lot that snails will bury and dig and whatnot inside the sand and turn it over. So as much as I honestly don't like snails, this seems pretty beneficial.

So, I guess I've got a few questions here:

Will my convict, firemouth, or upside down catfishes mutilate snails? the convict's been pretty violent recently, I'm a concerned she just wants to kill anything that moves. She was even attacking the net when I was removing her from the old tank, she might have fishrabies or something

Will the black mystery snails turn the substrate? what should I be looking for in regards to snail kind? How big do they tend to get?

is the convicts and firemouths digging enough to turn it as it is?

Thanks much

As above however it is possible the catfish may try and eat the snails.x

Mystery snails, regardless of the shell color, will not effectively turn the sand. The cichlids sound like they are doing a fine job of it though.
