My male platy has had his 1 sidefin bit off, im assuming its guppies but he was also in a tank with pearl gouramis, the guppys harass the platys as they are all male, the gouramis seem to keep to themselves, he has been in a seperate tank from other platys for 24 hrs, but 80% of the time he is fine, the rest he languishes near the bottom and sometimes lies down fully looking dead, a quick bit of hassle by me and he swims away but with the 1 fin missing he is not swimming 100% true, ive just readded 2 heavily pregnant females into the same tank as him as they are about to drop and i want the fry to have a higher chance of survival. He is currently led between a rock and some java moss, but perfectly true not leaning at all, when he was 1st added to the smaller tank the neons tried to pick on him but soon gave up, but im not sure if he will last till the morning, he is still breathing and was eating 30 mins before he decided a nap was in order.

Anyone have any advice?

cheers

Fish can regrow fins back. My female guppy, which is a relative of the platy regrew her tail fin. So I think regrowing his pectoral fin would not be a problem if he still has the base of it. If it was completely torn off at the joint and he ends up surviving it may or may not grow back, but I don't know for sure since this wasn't the exact case for my guppy. I know that soft tissue grows back a lot faster than hard tissue. Add salt to his tank and aerate to help keep the bacteria down. Bacteria don't like being exposed to oxygen. Fish can sometimes be a lot tougher than we give credit for. They probably had to deal with this quite often in the wild.

I have never seen a removed pectoral fin grow back but minor nips heal rather quickly. I have seen many fish with a single missing pectoral that swam quite well and functioned well in other ways. My daughter even had a nice big cichlid female with only one pectoral that was the mother of several hundred fry. I became involved because I had a supply of live food that she used for the fry. Otherwise I might not have known about her.
